Just like every other art form, whether playing music, creating a painting or sculpture or performing a theatrical work, writing can be extremely rewarding to the person doing the writing. Writing something which communicates your feelings or thoughts and of which the writer is proud can be just as rewarding as creating a beautiful physical object such as a painting. When a writer creates something they can also share it with other people and in a way, share themselves. No matter whether you write poems, articles, or fictional stories, there are many benefits to the activity of writing. Read on for a few of the benefits of writing. 1. Independent thinking. Writing is an activity which requires you to think. You have to come up with a topic, consider what angle to approach this topic from, think about the exact wording to use and how best to convey your message through this piece of writing. Writing hones your powers of observation as well as being a great mental exercise over all. 2. Expressing Yourself. There are few better ways to get whatever it is on your chest off of it - and onto the page. Many find that there are things they could never say but can write. Writing is a good means of communication, particularly when to talk about something in person may cause embarrassment or is simply difficult to discuss one on one. Writing lets you be free from these potentially awkward situations. 3. Building confidence. Writing can help people to boost their self confidence. Although writing is generally a solitary activity, it can increase self esteem and confidence by allowing the writer to produce something which they can point to as an accomplishment. The writer learns that they can in fact express whatever they are feeling without having to worry about what others may think. Especially for children who lack confidence, writing is a great skill to practice. 4. Writing is a great way to build verbal skills. Not only is writing beneficial in improving writing skills, practicing writing tends to produce a more thoughtful approach to reading as well. Writing also hones speaking skills as it teaches writers to better express themselves. Reading the writing of others can also have this benefit, as people see something of themselves in the words of another and learn a little about how to speak themselves. 5. Health benefits. Believe it or no, writing even has health benefits. Writing is something which can be a coping strategy for the writer, allowing them to deal with stress. Fiction writers especially are able to put their own experiences on the page and work through them in this way. Writing can also be a good way to present and preserve memories. No matter what you decide to write, after you are done, you will feel rewarded knowing that you are able to express yourself. Once you share your writing, you are able to show others what you have to say and what you feel about things.
