Diploma In Many Names

The emerging crop of young adults today usually see a diploma as the realization of all the difficulties they have endured during their years in school. The diploma is the physical representation of graduation. It is the parchment that verifies the triumph over every educational trials hurled at the student.

Behind the diploma is something far more important than a piece of paper with fancy writing. It is that often forgotten tool that only a proper education can provide. Sandwiched between the good and bad memories are bullets everyone should have to survive. When that knowledge, information and wisdom are combined with the potent human mind, anything is possible.

The diploma is handed out by the school to a graduating individual as proof of that the former student has passed all requirements and pre-requisites to move on to the next level. Though it goes by different names, such as "testimonium" or "testamur" in other parts of the world, it is still the same testament to all the hard work and dedication poured in by the student to achieve a certain degree of knowledge and skill. However, diplomas were not originally made from papyrus. If great teachers like Aristotle or Plato had to hand out diplomas during their days, they would be made from sheepskin. The sheepskin is flattened through a special manufacturing process that turned it as thin as paper.

During those times, the names of their students, such as young Alexander the Great and Dion of Syracuse would have been written manually just moments before the graduation ceremony. Sheepskin was eventually replaced by parchment as the main material for making diplomas. Afterwards, educational institutions started binding them in leather.

During its sheepskin days, the diploma was a very big piece of document. Fortunately, it is reduced to the size of a typical bond paper, making it easier for students to frame their latest feat. Though the word diploma is represented in many ways, it still signifies one thing and that is educational achievement.
