Commonly, diploma mills are known to lack the required educational standards and so the diplomas given by such institution are deemed worthless. Diploma mills operate without any supervision of the official educational institution or board. They aren't recognized or certified by accreditation bodies. Even so, these diploma mills trick people into thinking they are, by claiming that they are accredited by a non-recognized board. This makes it seems as if their institution is really authentic. The marketing of diploma mills are very deceptive, because they claim that they are backed by a fake organization that gives accreditation. They can also trick people into thinking that the business license they hold is actually a kind of government endorsement. The names of these diploma mills are also made to sound reputable. In many countries, diploma mills are generally illegal as the diplomas and degrees given by these diploma mills are commonly used for fraudulent purposes. In countries such as Australia, calling an institution a university is a criminal offense as the use of the term university requires the accreditation and approval from the Mister of Education, Science and Training. These diploma mills are prevalent especially on online education or online degrees. The students are usually given a non standard or lower units of course work while some also allows the student to buy the credentials instead of earning them. It can be a lot of trouble if you enroll in a diploma mill. This is why you should always check first if a particular educational institution is really accredited. If you plan on getting an online degree, you can call the college or university to check whether they really are offering the online course or not. You can also check the state educational board to see if the institution is legally registered.
