Shortened version: Many great African American organizations are committed to the advancement of women of color. These organizations further their goals by supporting African American women financially while they are pursuing a college education. There are many different scholarships that are tailored specifically for the African American woman. These scholarships include programs for the athlete, the exceptional student, or the truly dedicated person. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), a governing body of college and university athletic programs, sponsors scholarships for african american women through its Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics. The goal of this scholarship is to increase the pool of qualified female and minority candidates in the field of intercollegiate athletics administration by providing them with the financial means to pursue postgraduate studies. Qualified candidates are women who are applying to graduate programs in sports-related fields of study that will direct them towards careers in intercollegiate athletics. The Black Women in Sports Foundation funds several scholarships for women of African American descent. Their Madeline Kountze Dugger-Kelly Scholarship is awarded to black women currently enrolled in a graduate program who were previously active in undergraduate sports. Candidates are assessed based on their community service and personal character. The Black Women in Sisterhood for Action, BISA, promotes the education and career advancement of black women in financial hardship. BISA also assists by providing transportation and life coaching. NHBW, National Black Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc, began in 1973 as a way for African American women and their families to find assistance in areas such as the arts, culture, and health. This organization funds scholarships through the Sister to Sister program. The recipients of this scholarship are minority women who are going back to school without the financial support of their family. There are also scholarship programs that are geared for black women who are about to or have already graduated high school and wish to further their educations. In New Jersey, the Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey, or ABWL-NJ began in 1975 to assist the women of New Jersey to continue their educations. This association funds candidates who are African American, female, and pursuing a law degree. These candidates are awarded scholarships based upon their need and community service record. The Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP), established in 1982, strives to improve public health and welfare through public outreach. Their Rebecca Lee, MD Scholarship is named in recognition of the first black female physician who graduated medical school one year before the end of slavery in 1864. Qualified candidates are black women who either reside in Southern California or are enrolled in medical school in Southern California. Applicants are evaluated based on academic merit, financial need and community outreach. Whether you are a minority woman looking to pursue an education in the liberal arts, medical sciences, justice system or athletic administration, there are many African American organizations striving to promote the advancement of black women through educational scholarships.
