Everybody loves the sweet little dog from those Taco Bell commercials, and it is true that Chihuahuas make lovely little pets, but did you know that the lives of these small dogs, when purchased from a pet store, can be a long and difficult trial to be sure? It is a sad fact in our country today that many of the desirable small breed dogs are being churned out by the hundreds each year by unscrupulous breeders who run puppy mills. A Chihuahua breeder supplying pet stores with these little dogs is usually a part of one of these terrible and inhumane centers. Many pet store owners are unaware of the terrible conditions in which the dogs raised by one of these Chihuahua breeders are kept. The majority of pet store owners actually think that they are buying from a respectable Chihuahua breeder, never knowing that they are actually helping the puppy mills to stay in business. The truth of the matter is that a respectable Chihuahua breeder would never sell a single pup to a pet store. Preferring instead to thoroughly research anyone who requests a pup, in order to make certain that their pups are going to good homes. The conditions in which the pups are bred in these puppy mills are nothing short of animal cruelty. Sometimes hundreds of females and pups are all living together in cramped conditions, often having to go without food or water for days. These conditions are rarely sanitary, and it is not unusual to find several dead pups and adult females each day. Even worse than the conditions the dogs are forced to live in, are the conditions under which the females are bred. The unscrupulous Chihuahua breeder will breed each female in their kennel each time they come into season. By breeding unhealthy females, they produce sickly pups. These pups are then shipped as quickly as possible, often before they are completely weaned, without receiving the medical treatment that is necessary to ensure their health. This has led many a new dog owner to take home a pup that will eventually cost them thousands of dollars in vet bills. When you make the decision to only purchase Chihuahua puppies from a respected Chihuahua breeder you can rest assured that you are doing your part to help put these puppy mills out of business. With every puppy that is purchased from a pet store, another puppy mill makes a profit and continues their cycle of cruelty to animals. This has led to many new dog owners discovering that their new puppy needs extensive medical attention, or worse needs to be put down immediately. All too often, the pups bought in pet stores die within just a few months of going home with their new owners. An honest Chihuahua breeder would never supply a single puppy to a pet store. They understand that it takes love and patience to care for these little dogs. And they treat them with all the love and respect they deserve. By refusing to purchase a Chihuahua puppy from a pet store you can save yourself both thousands of dollars in unexpected vet bills, as well as the terrible heartbreak that comes from watching a sick puppy die.
